Is sugar addictive like a drug?
No, not in the way the headlines mean. In humans there is no clear evidence that sugar creates a chemical dependence the way a drug does. What resembles addiction has more to do with sweetness, availability and all-or-nothing bans than with the sugar itself.

What the research says
The line "sugar lights up the brain like cocaine" almost always comes from animal work. Avena and colleagues summarised a rat model in which sweetened water releases dopamine and the body's own opioids in the reward system, and in which the rats show four behaviours that resemble addiction: bingeing, withdrawal, craving and cross-sensitisation. But the picture carries a decisive condition. The behaviours appear only when the rats get sugar intermittently, denied it for a while and then allowed to binge. With free access the pattern disappears. It is the rhythm of scarcity and excess that creates the bingeing, not the molecule itself.
In humans the support is weak. Benton worked through a series of predictions that follow from the addiction hypothesis and found that none held up in human studies: sugar does not behave like a physically addictive substance, and does not by itself drive eating disorders. Westwater and colleagues reached the same conclusion in their review. There is little to suggest sugar addiction in humans, and the addiction-like behaviours seen in animals stem from access to sweet, palatable food, not from the chemistry of sugar.
At the same time it is worth separating two things. That some people feel they lose control around sweet, energy-dense food is real. But it is about the eating and the reward around it, not a chemical hook in a single ingredient. Often the restriction is what lights the spark: the stricter the ban, the stronger the pull.
Why the myth exists
"Addiction" is a strong word, and it does several things at once. It explains a real struggle, the evening craving for something sweet is familiar to many, and an account that blames the substance rather than the person is kind. The animal studies lend the language authority, but the caveat, that the rats binge only under scheduled scarcity, drops out on the way to the headline. Then there is the money. Detox programmes, sugar-free products and quitting protocols can only sell a fix if sugar is first framed as a drug you must give up entirely. And the irony is that this very message, the total ban, is often what feeds the loss of control it promises to cure.
What it means for you
You don't need to detox or quit cold turkey. The research points the other way: strict bans and stretches of deprivation are often what trigger the bingeing. Instead, let sugar fit into everyday life in normal amounts, so your body isn't swinging between banning and bingeing. If you want to see how the sweet stuff fits into your day without running it, work out your macros. And if food genuinely feels out of control, that's worth support from a clinician, not a stricter ban.
