Do ice baths help muscle recovery?
It depends on what you're after. For short-term soreness and fatigue an ice bath gives modest relief, but taken regularly right after strength training it slows muscle and strength gains.

What the research says
The evidence splits by what you measure. A Cochrane review by Bleakley and colleagues pooled 17 small trials with 366 people in total and found that cold-water immersion below 15 °C reduced muscle soreness in the days after exercise compared with resting or doing nothing. The benefit was real, but the studies were small and low in quality, mostly involved running, and it stayed unclear whether cold beat other active recovery methods. Dupuy and colleagues' meta-analysis of 99 studies reached the same place: immersion and cold exposure produced a small-to-large drop in soreness and lowered inflammatory markers, but massage came out as the most powerful technique. So cold helps, but it isn't anything special.
The catch shows up over time. In a randomized controlled trial, Roberts and colleagues had 21 men strength-train for twelve weeks, half taking an ice bath after each session and half doing light active recovery. Strength and muscle mass grew more in the active-recovery group, and muscle-fibre size and satellite-cell activity rose only in those who skipped the ice bath. Chilling the muscle straight after lifting blunts the very signals that build it.
So ice baths can make you feel recovered sooner, which matters when you have to perform again tomorrow. But if the goal is to build muscle or strength, a bath right after the session works against the training. Timing is the lever: leave a few hours, or save the cold for rest days and competition blocks rather than after every workout.
Why the myth exists
Cold plunges became a status ritual. Elite athletes and figures like Wim Hof turned them into proof of discipline, and what we watch the top do we readily assume we need too. The discomfort itself hardens the belief: the shock and the alert feeling afterward get read as recovery, when much of it is just the cold numbing pain and delivering an adrenaline hit. Then there are the incentives. Ice barrels, recovery studios and spas sell equipment and memberships, and a sunrise ice-water routine is content that builds a brand. Nobody profits from the duller message: that if you want to build muscle, a plunge right after the session may do more harm than good.
What it means for you
If you like ice baths because they feel good or calm you down, keep them. It's a reasonable habit and not harmful to your health. Just don't take one right after a strength session if you're training for muscle or strength. Save it for rest days, or for when you need to feel fresh before a match. And remember that soreness isn't the same as damage, and numbing it doesn't build any muscle.
