Do ice baths after lifting ruin muscle gains?
Cold-water immersion right after a lifting session does blunt some muscle growth, but "ruin" is too strong. The effect is modest and it's about the timing right after training – if building muscle is the goal, the simple answer is to move the ice bath to another time of day.

What the research says
The starting point is a mechanism: resistance training creates a brief inflammatory and anabolic signal, and satellite cells plus the mTOR pathway kick off repair and growth. Cold blunts exactly that signal. Roberts and colleagues showed it in a randomized study where 21 active men trained twice a week for twelve weeks. Half took a ten-minute ice bath after each session; the other half did light active recovery. Strength and muscle mass increased more in the recovery group, and type II fiber cross-sectional area and the number of nuclei per fiber rose only there, not in those who cold-plunged.
A single study isn't enough, but the picture holds in pooled data. Grgic's meta-analysis of the effect on strength found a small overall attenuation. It was clearest when only one limb was cooled; with whole-body immersion there was no reliable difference from control. Piñero and colleagues ran the equivalent review for muscle growth and concluded that cold immersion straight after a session may blunt hypertrophy.
The nuance matters. Fyfe and colleagues had participants do whole-body resistance training with or without cold immersion and saw reduced fiber growth but no difference in maximal strength. Taken together: the cold disturbs a process running for the hours after a session, the effect on muscle size is reasonably consistent but modest, and the effect on strength is weaker and less clear-cut. This applies when the bath is taken right around training – not cold exposure in general, and not on days you haven't trained.
Why the myth exists
An ice bath feels like pure recovery, so the idea that it works against growth is counterintuitive and therefore compelling. When the first striking study landed, a couple of headlines flipped the bath from hero to villain, and a modest attenuation became "ruins your gains." Fitness media reward dramatic reversals, and among lifters there's a nagging fear of wasting results, which spreads the warning faster than the nuance. At the same time the recovery industry sells both cold plunges and the message that they're indispensable, so the polarization gets oxygen from both sides. What actually holds – the hours after a session, a modest effect, mostly on muscle size – is too undramatic to carry a headline.
What it means for you
If you're building muscle and enjoy cold plunges: keep them, but separate them from the lifting session. Take the bath at another time of day or on rest days, so the repair signal gets its first hours undisturbed. After a hard endurance session or a competition, when fast recovery matters more than a few percent of extra growth, cold immersion is still reasonable. Strength seems less affected than muscle size, so whoever mainly cares about getting strong has the least to worry about.
