Is lactic acid what causes muscle soreness the next day?
No. Lactate is gone from the muscles within an hour of the workout, long before the soreness arrives. Muscle soreness comes from small mechanical injuries to the muscle fibers, mainly from braking work, not from acid left behind.

What the research says
The timeline alone separates the two. Lactic acid, or more precisely lactate, forms when muscles work hard, but the concentration falls back to resting levels within about an hour of stopping. Soreness arrives a full day later and peaks after one to three days. Something already gone cannot be behind a pain that has not yet started.
Schwane and colleagues tested the link directly. Subjects ran on a treadmill for 45 minutes, once on the level and once at a ten percent downhill grade. Level running raised lactate clearly, yet no one got sore afterwards. Downhill, where the muscles brake against every stride, lactate did not rise at all, yet the subjects developed marked soreness. The pattern is unambiguous: the soreness followed the braking work, not the acid.
Cheung and colleagues review the proposed explanations for soreness and conclude that it is eccentric work, where the muscle lengthens under load, that produces micro-injury in the fibers. The damage sets off an inflammatory process over the following days, and that is what hurts. Lactic acid does not belong on the list.
Robergs and colleagues show, on top of this, that the underlying premise is shaky. Lactate production does not even cause the acidity that builds in the muscle during hard work; if anything it slows it. The picture of lactate as a corrosive waste product that lingers and aches does not match the biochemistry.
Why the myth exists
The myth persists because it was taught as fact. Generations were told in school gym class that lactic acid causes soreness, and what you learn early and from an authority is rarely questioned. The explanation also feels logical: the workout burns, the next day you ache, and it is easy to tie the burning sensation during effort to the soreness that follows. That they have different causes and separate timelines is not visible without measurement. The word lactic acid has also become a convenient culprit, resold by massage, stretching routines and recovery products that promise to flush the acid out. A vague villain you can clear away is easier to market than micro-injuries that simply heal on their own.
What it means for you
You don't need to try to squeeze out any lactic acid afterwards. There is none left to get rid of, and stretching, shaking the legs or cooling down won't remove the soreness, though light movement can feel good. Once you see the soreness for what it is, a sign of an unfamiliar load, you stop treating it as proof of a good session. Getting sore from a new exercise is expected and settles within a few days as the body adjusts. If you want to be less sore next time, raise the load gradually rather than jumping straight into something unfamiliar.
