Does dairy bloat me even if I'm not lactose intolerant?
It can, but a large share of the bloating people blame on dairy is really about dose, expectation, or something else in the gut. Before you cut out a whole food group, it's worth testing it properly.

What the research says
Lactose intolerance is not an on-or-off condition but a spectrum. The NIH consensus panel concluded that most people who malabsorb lactose still tolerate small amounts without meaningful symptoms, and that intolerance is often overstated in everyday life.
The clearest evidence comes from Suarez and colleagues. They took 30 people who described themselves as severely lactose intolerant to small amounts of milk and ran hydrogen breath tests: 21 turned out to genuinely malabsorb lactose, while 9 (nearly one in three) actually digested lactose completely normally. All 30 then drank one glass (240 ml) of ordinary milk or lactose-free milk daily for a week each, double-blind. Gastrointestinal symptoms were minimal in both cases and did not differ. The conclusion: many people attribute vague abdominal symptoms to lactose when it isn't the culprit.
Misselwitz and colleagues summarize the mechanisms in their review in Gut. When symptoms do arise, they depend more on gut sensitivity, the gut flora and the dose than on the lactose content itself, and lactose intolerance overlaps heavily with IBS and visceral hypersensitivity. Expectation matters: if you believe milk will make you feel bad, symptoms can appear anyway. Dairy can of course cause discomfort through things other than lactose, such as the fat slowing gastric emptying, but that isn't classic lactose intolerance.
The net picture: yes, milk can bloat you even if you're not lactose intolerant in the usual sense. But much dairy bloating is dose, expectation or something else, not proof that dairy has to go.
Why the myth exists
The gut rumbles for a thousand reasons, and milk is a convenient suspect: a visible, named food you just put in your body. The misattribution happens almost automatically. On top of that is the expectation effect, which the Suarez study shows plainly: if you believe milk upsets you, symptoms can appear regardless of what the glass held. Wellness influencers and elimination diets reinforce the pattern, because cutting out a whole group and seeing if things improve feels controllable. The incentives point the same way: the market for plant drinks and free-from products benefits when dairy looks problematic, and test kits and elimination programs live off vague worry. Dairy-free is as much a sales label as a dietary recommendation.
What it means for you
If you suspect milk, test it systematically rather than guessing. Start with one glass (240 ml) and see whether the discomfort actually shows up. Then try lactose-free milk as a blind control: if it bloats you just as much, lactose probably isn't the cause. Most people tolerate small amounts, and hard cheese and yogurt hold less lactose than a large glass of milk. For persistent or severe gut symptoms, take it up with a healthcare provider rather than cutting out food groups on your own.
